Cruising Talk and Supper, Thursday 7th April

Criminal Courts of Justice

A structure containing court rooms that are exclusively used for the trial of criminal cases is by its nature an exceptionally complex building providing numerous challenges for the Architect.  Not least of these is designing a functional circulation system which separates the four very different types of individuals who will use the building, essentially without their circulation paths intersecting each other.  These of course are the Judiciary and Court officials, the Jury, the criminals on trial and members of the public.

Apart from solving these complicated requirements, the Criminal Courts of Justice provide an elegantly aesthetic solution and create an important statement within the urban fabric of Dublin.  Amongst the Awards received, the Courts were voted the People’s Choice Award at the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland annual competitions in 2010.

Peter McGovern has been a Director within the Practice of Henry J Lyons Architects since 1995 and since then has designed and worked on numerous projects of architectural significance.  He is currently designing the new Surgical Teaching Building for the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, and the new Headquarters for the Central Bank of Ireland.

The Royal Irish Yacht Club Cannons Ceremony Saturday 2nd April

The Royal Irish Yacht Club Cannons

The brass and cast-iron cannons which have adorned the terrace of the Royal Irish Yacht Club for as long as anyone can remember, have been missing one of their number since it ‘disappeared’ more than 50 years ago.
Last year, former Commodore Henry Leonard started the process of having the missing cannon replaced and to have four additional replicas made using the identical materials and manufacturing techniques which were particular to the originals.  Considerable research was required to achieve this, and eventually a specialist foundry in Athy was selected to undertake the task.

Five new cannons have now been completed, and Henry has generously decided to donate them to the Club. The cannons will be unveiled at a special ceremony and reception on Saturday 2nd April at 19.30hrs.  All Members are invited to attend this remarkable and unique occasion, and to take supper in the Dining Room afterwards if they feel so inclined.  The entire Club expresses its sincere thanks to Henry Leonard for such a thoughtful and generous gift.

If you would like to reserve a place for dinner, please contact the Catering Office.

Saskia & Andrea Olympic Games Fundraising

Bid to represent Ireland at 2016 Olympic Games

There was Dinner in the Club in March, during which Saskia and Andrea made a presentation that shows the extent of training and commitment required to compete at this level and to demonstrate the tension, excitement and energy involved in racing a 49er.

Two young women, Members of the Royal Irish Yacht Club, Saskia Tidey and Andrea Brewster, are members of the ISA Olympic Squad and are currently seeking to be selected to represent Ireland in the 49er FX Skiff Class at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games in 2016, when, for the first time, the all-female Skiff Class will be included in the Games.

For the past while, they have been training in Australia and in Florida and competing internationally in order to acquire the appropriate ranking to represent Ireland at the Olympics.
Despite joining the ranking process later than others, they are now ranked as the 14thNation and the 24th Boat in the world.  There are many more competitions yet to take place before the selection for an Olympic place, but this place is now closely within their grasp.

Upcoming events in Palma de Mallorca, France, Italy, Holland, the UK and Portugal will lead to the World Championships in Argentina in October/November of this year and ultimately, we hope, to the Olympic Games in 2016.  Throughout their training and competing at events, they have sailed their boat identifying their membership of the Royal Irish Yacht Club.  This is a hugely important indicator of the Club’s profile worldwide.  Last year, with the generous help of sponsorship from Spirit Motors and Volvo Ireland, they drove their campaign Volvo an incredible 13,500 km throughout Europe, towing the 49erFX from event to event.  Their commitment to their sport is unquestionable and Andrea and Saskia’s quest for improvement is relentless.  For this we thank them and we now wish to demonstrate our continuing support at the fundraising event.
Members can take the opportunity to see the cost of the individual items, such as gloves, harnesses, mast, boom, spinnaker, etc, all of which must be purchased and renewed, often many times, during the course of their preparation and training.  Members will be invited to identify and become sponsors, at whatever level they wish, towards one or more of this long list of equipment.
Apart from the fact that the Olympic Games take place only every four years, it is an even rarer event to have young Members of the Royal Irish Yacht Club attempting to compete in them.  I therefore urge the membership to get solidly behind this initiative and support the efforts of these two young ladies, of whom we are immensely proud.

      Sailabilty Dun Laoghaire Programme 2015

Dún Laoghaire Access sailing has changed its name to Sailability Dún Laoghaire in line with the ISA decision to rename
the national body Sailability Ireland. This coincides with the linkup with Sailability in the North so that sailing for
disabled people is now organised on a truly countrywide basis.
In Dún Laoghaire a very full programme is planned for the coming season. An Introductory Day will be held in June,
Sunday Sailing will start in mid June to continue until the end of August and 2 week long courses will take place in June
      and August.

Over 35 children took part in the courses in Dún Laoghaire last year and with popularity growing we anticipate the same
or higher numbers participating this year.
As always this programme would not happen without the very generous support of the 4 waterfront clubs, the noble band
of volunteers that turn up every week and the instructors who are an essential element of each course and who are really
great with the children. We are always looking for help so please contact us if you would like to get involved.
This year the President’s Cup will be hosted by the RIYC in late August. The event, founded by John Twomey, was
inaugurated last year in Kinsale. Each of the 4 provinces fields 4 crews sailing in each of 4 different types of boat –
Hansa 303, Squib, 2.4m and Skuds. Teams will participate, this year, from Dun Laoghaire, Kinsale, Galway and
      Carrickfergus.
The Hansa National Regatta will be held in Carrickfergus during the August weekend.
      2015 Programme:
      1. Intro Day RIYC 7th June.
      2. Sunday sailing at RStGYC with DMYC 14th June – ends 16th Aug.
      3. June Week Course NYC 15th -19th June

Tim Norwood & Finn Cleary came second in the RS Eastern Feva championships, sailing a club Feva “The Des Rogan” and hosted by the RSGYC last weekend. It was the first RS event that Tim & Finn  had sailed in and they were one of the  youngest and lightest competitors.  They led the event on the first day coming 1st in the first three races and 2nd in the fourth race, on the second day the wind increased with gusts of up to 20 knots of breeze making it difficult for the light crew.

After a spectacular capsize in the second last race,  Tim and Finn managed to right the boat in record time and continue sailing only losing two places, they ended up 2nd overall. A fantastic achievement for their first event.
Also representing the Club at the event and sailing well finishing 7th overall  Siofra Mooney and Caoimhe Keane and sailing for one day of the event Max Goodbody & Daisy Dillon Malone.”
