Vera Quinlan joined the INFOMAR team as a hydrographer in 2008 and is currently Team Leader for INFOMAR Mapping and Products based at the Marine Institute in Galway. INFOMAR is Ireland’s national seabed mapping program concerned with mapping the full extent of our underwater territory. When not on the water Vera is concerned with managing, analysing and processing bathymetric multibeam datasets arising from the INFOMAR project.
Vera started sailing at the age of 10 in a laser on Lough Derg. After seven years cruising with her parents and siblings aboard their Sabre 27 on the west and south coasts of Ireland, France and Scotland, Vera went to Liverpool to study Oceanography and Hydrographic surveying. Following graduation in 1993, a decade of climbing and a career in deep water 3D seismic survey ensued. In 2004 she fulfilled an ambition to skipper an Atlantic passage. Vera is a member of the Irish Cruising Club and spends one five week block a year cruising with Peter Owens and their children Lilian 9 and Ruairi 7, on-board their 43ft steel Bruce Roberts ketch ‘Danú’, 2016 saw this family cruise the delights of the Spanish Rias of Galicia. In 2019 this family plans an extensive cruise to faraway places.
