Dr Michael Kennedy has since 1997 been the Executive Editor of the Royal Irish Academy’s Documents on Irish Foreign Policy Series. DIFP has chronicled the development of Ireland’s place amongst the nations through original documents from the archives of the Department of Foreign Affairs. Starting in 1919, the series is now on its eleventh volume, which will cover 1957 to 1961.
Dr Kennedy has published widely on Irish military, diplomatic, political and, in recent years, maritime history. Amongst his recent publications are Guarding Neutral Ireland: The Coast Watching Service and Military Intelligence 1939 – 1945 (2008) and Ireland, the United Nations and the Congo (2014).
In 2016, with Dr Eoin Kinsella, he curated the exhibition and accompanying booklet ‘Safety at sea through war and upheaval: Irish Lights 1911-1923’ which was based original and previously unseen materials from the archives of of Irish Lights.
